For Pup’s Sake!

Enabling New Puppy Owners to Take a Breath

(and maybe a shower!)

If your new pup is an angel who does everything you ask, sleeps through the night and whose farts smell of sunbeams and rainbows, then I think you might be in the wrong place. But I would like to know your secret!

However, for all sleep-deprived, irritable (on the verge of a breakdown), real-life puppy owners, a warm welcome!

Let me tell you a secret…

New puppies are hard work. I mean, REALLY HARD WORK!

Actually, it’s not that big of a secret. Because other people have probably said this to you, and you’ll have nodded in agreement, while silently thinking, “Really? How hard can they actually be?” And now you’re here. Which suggests you’ve found out the answer to that question.

I’m guessing that sometimes it feels like they’re actively plotting against you. You suspect that they’re planning how to annoy you next (Should I wee on the carpet after she’s taken me outside? Or maybe I could tip over my water bowl for the umpteenth time today..?)

So, take a breath

And then another one. (I can highly recommend the Headspace App!) Remember, this is a puppy, brand new to the world, and to your life. They are trying to figure out how to get food, water, and your love and attention. It’s your job to guide, teach and encourage them to make the choices that best fit into your lifestyle. And I’m here to help you do that.

My Values

While the details in the descriptions may change, these are the values I live by in my work now, when I was working with my puppy-training clients, and when I’m with my dog.

Have these values in mind when interacting with your puppy, and you will both be set up for success.

And for those other moments, there is ALWAYS wine!

Do the Right Thing, Not the easy thing

Your puppy is reliant on you for everything. Even when you’re tired and cranky, you need to do what’s best for them in the long run.

Cherish the wins

Whether it’s the first time your pup pees outside, or when they finally sleep through the night, make sure you recognise and celebrate these moments.

Aim For success, and prepare for failures

Trust in yourself and your puppy to learn and get things right. But always have a backup plan for when things take a little longer than expected.

Laugh. Or you will cry.

When your pup chews up your brand new kindle (yup!), laugh, and remind yourself to put things out of reach in future.

There is always wine

Keep perspective.
It’s hard when you’re sleep-deprived, I know. But try to have things that are still for you, and make you feel better. Oxygen masks and all that!
